    The BJS "reporting unit" — the administrative body (e.g. a sheriff's office) that operates one or more facilities. HIFLD facilities do not have an agency.

    City or town where the facility is located.
    County
    County (or equivalent jurisdiction) where the facility is located.
    State
    Two-letter state abbreviation.
    Level
    Jurisdiction level: county (sheriff-operated), city (municipal), regional (multi-county), federal (Bureau of Prisons), or other.
    Status
    Operating status: 1 = open, 2 = closed. BJS-sourced; HIFLD facilities are assumed open.
    Private
    Whether the facility is privately operated: 1 = private, 0 = public.
    Capacity
    Total rated beds (maximum number of individuals the facility is designed to hold) as reported by the data source.
    Per 100k
    Total rated jail beds in this jurisdiction per 100,000 residents (2019 Census population). All facilities in the same jurisdiction share this figure.
